The "Great Flattening" Is Shrinking Management Without Preparing Those Who Remain

Only 6% of leaders say their middle managers are prepared to lead through change across most of the organization; roughly 19% say managers are unprepared company-wide and another 19% simply don't know. Two-thirds of organizations provide manager development resources and half offer coaching, yet just 10% systematically use span-of-control data to track how management roles are actually changing.

Why it matters

Organizational leaders flattening structures are removing a layer whose replacement capability they cannot measure — span-of-control instrumentation is the missing diagnostic before further delayering.
